In 1944, Joseph S. Herring purchased his first golden retriever, Duchess of Roedare, and started the Harbor City line of Golden Retrievers in Duluth, MN. This was the foundation for a breeding program that has produced such notable dogs as Harbor City Shadrack *** OS, FC Harbor City Rebel FDHF, Virginia Dare of Bootlake OD, and Harbor City Ben Misbehavin' ("Shadow" in the movie "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey"). Moving to California in 1962, Joe Herring brought the Harbor City line to the West Coast, while his daughter, Jo Ann Fairbanks, continued the line in Duluth. Over the years, we have strived for excellence in our breeding of Golden Retrievers to produce a genetically healthy animal with intelligence, biddability, and a strong hunting desire. All of our brood stock have their eyes CERF'd and their hips OFA'd and/or Penn Hipped. More recently, we have also been radiographing elbows. Our puppies are sold with a guarantee against genetic eye and hip defects. If, for any reason, the purchaser(s) cannot keep the puppy (dog), we will always accept the animal back at any time, any age.

Because this breed has been so popular and many genetic defects have been bred into it, we are very discriminating in our breeding practices. Therefore, we don't just breed "good" dogs, we breed genetically healthy animals that make exceptional pets and great hunting companions.

Puppies are whelped in our home and are handled from birth by both adults and children. Each puppy is individually socialized by caregivers, with personalities and temperaments being noted (this helps to match puppy temperaments with customers' lifestyle). After the puppies turn 2 weeks old, we offer puppy visitation twice weekly so that families with deposits have an opportunity to visit with all the pups and participate in their socialization. As for socialization, it involves more than just contact with humans. By four weeks of age, the puppies will have been introduced to other dogs, game birds, household and other common and loud noises. We have a pond and wooded areas where, depending on the season, the puppies are allowed to run, swim, explore, and learn about their environment.

• We sell puppies on a spay/neuter basis unless a prior agreement has been made.
• Puppies are checked by a veterinarian and sold with first set of shots, microchip ID, 3 wormings, and a 2 year hip and eye guarantee.
• To purchase a puppy, a non-refundable deposit must be placed to reserve a puppy from an upcoming litter. NOTE: The order in which deposits are placed determines the order in which the puppies are picked.
